The world mourns Pope Francis, whose papacy marked a profound shift toward mercy and inclusion in the Catholic Church.
His revolutionary words “who am I to judge?” regarding LGBTQ+ individuals offered unprecedented hope to marginalized communities. As the first pope to use the term “gay,” he signaled a fundamental shift toward greater dignity and recognition.
Francis envisioned the church as a “field hospital” healing wounds rather than a fortress of rules. His message of “todos, todos, todos” (everyone, everyone, everyone) embodied his conviction that the church must welcome all people unconditionally. During World Youth Day 2023, he urged: “There is space for everyone, and when there isn’t, please, let’s work so that there is.” His compassionate approach transformed global conversations about faith and religious leadership.
We have lost a remarkable shepherd who understood the Gospel’s universal embrace. Francis’s legacy lives on in countless hearts who found in him Christ’s boundless love and acceptance.

Letters: Pope Francis embodied moral clarity and empathy. Then came along Donald Trump.
