EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE — The 96th Test Wing has established a new test site south of Tampa to support military test and training missions over the Gulf of America, formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico, the Air Force announced on May 30.
Developed in coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard, the site expands the 96th Test Wing’s capability to track, measure, communicate and control systems tested across approximately 120,000 square miles of overwater airspace.
The site’s instrumentation is maintained by the 96th Test Wing and operated remotely from control centers at Eglin Air Force Base.
Located within the Eglin Test and Training Complex, one of the largest military ranges in the continental United States, the new site enhances the Department of Defense’s ability to conduct research, development, testing, and evaluation of conventional weapons and electronic systems.
