National Arbor Day is a very old holiday, dating back to 1872 in Nebraska. That’s what fifth grade students at Granville Intermediate School learned during an assembly on April 25. A tradition at the school is to have a tree planting, a program put on by the Granville Tree and Landscape Commission, and a poster contest.
Besides learning about the history of Arbor Day, the students heard about the benefits of trees and the Tree City USA designation, which Granville has earned for 34 consecutive years. Village Council member Joe Leithauser read a proclamation signed by Mayor Melissa Hartfield. Sixth grade students from Ms. Wyant’s class shared facts about their pocket forest project, which they planned and installed recently on school grounds.
This year an Autumn Blaze maple was planted in front of the building. Albyn’s Landscape and Nursery Center selected and delivered the tree, and American Electric Power donated the cost. In 2003, when the intermediate school was new, a Buckeye tree was planted to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Ohio’s statehood.
Fifth-grade Granville Intermediate students created posters depicting the theme “Trees are Terrific… in All Shapes and Sizes!” From left, contest winners were Tucker Arundel, Daphne Harms, Vernon Sheffield, Vivian Bell, and Gisele Cotterman.
Each fifth-grade student created a poster depicting the theme “Trees are Terrific… in All Shapes and Sizes!” Winners of this year’s contest received Whit’s gift cards and T-shirts. They are:
-
1st place — Tucker Arundel, who drew a thick forest of different species.
-
2nd place — Daphne Harms, who researched and illustrated the blossoms, fruit and nuts of 26 different trees.
-
3rd place — Vernon Sheffield, whose drawing compared the unique structures of an oak, a redwood and a spruce.
-
4th place — Vivian Bell, who included a pink flowering tree, a small sapling, a tall birch and a fully-leafed out tree.
-
5th place — Gisele Cotterman, whose colorful poster contrasted trees of differing heights, branching structures and root flares.
Congratulations to all the fifth-grade students!
