A Helendale School District employee was arrested this week on suspicion of possessing child pornography and being a convicted felon in possession of a gun and ammunition, authorities said Friday.
Steven Franklin Kiper, 47, was taken into custody Wednesday on suspicion of possession of child pornography, as well as possession of a firearm and ammunition by a previously convicted felon, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officials and booking records.
He had previously been listed as a grounds/maintenance worker at the district office on the district’s website.

Helendale school officials said they were informed of the arrest on Thursday.
“Upon learning of this arrest, the District proactively placed the employee on paid administrative leave, effective immediately, pending further notice and action,” the district said in a written statement.
“At this time, we have no information that suggests that any students or members of the school community were placed at risk,” the statement added. “The District remains vigilant and will take immediate action if any new information arises.”
Kiper was arrested shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday in a residential neighborhood in the 14900 block of Autumn Lane, about a quarter-mile from Helendale Elementary School.
He was released from custody pending legal proceedings Thursday after posting bail, records show. An initial court date was not yet scheduled.
The arrest stemmed from an ongoing investigation by the Sheriff’s Crimes Against Children Unit, department spokeswoman Mara Rodriguez said. Possible additional arrests were pending.
