Flooding in Frankfort, Kentucky, left a local distillery’s grounds submerged in water — and brought in some surprise visitors.
As the flood waters receded, Buffalo Trace Distillery discovered the flooding swept more than 250 pounds of fish from the Kentucky River.
“After the historic flooding in Frankfort, KY, we witnessed something pretty incredible on the Buffalo Trace Distillery grounds,” the distillery posted on Facebook “As the waters receded, a pool nearly a quarter mile from the river was found teeming with fish, including an ironically fitting Bigmouth Buffalo.”
Students in Kentucky State University’s Aquaculture Program, arrived on the scene to help return the fish back to their home. Freddie Johnson, Buffalo Trace’s longtime tour guide, joined the students on their rescue mission.

“…They suited up and waded in to rescue the stranded fish, using seine nets to safely transport over 250 pounds of native species back to the Kentucky River,” Buffalo Trace said on Facebook.
The distillery shared several photos from the rescue in the Facebook post and gave a shout out to the students for their help.
“Huge thanks to KSU for leading the effort and for letting us share these photos of a one-of-a-kind day at the Trace,” they wrote.

“This unexpected moment of teamwork, resilience and care for the local ecosystem reminded us that the spirit of Buffalo Trace goes far beyond bourbon,” the distillery wrote.
