Louisville is one of more than 500 “sanctuary jurisdictions” across the U.S. being accused of obstructing the enforcement of federal immigration laws by the Trump administration.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security published a list of jurisdictions May 29, saying each will receive a formal notice of its noncompliance and should revise its policies to align with federal law.
The list is based on several factors like compliance with federal law enforcement, information restrictions and legal protections for illegal aliens. It will be updated regularly and can be changed at any time, the department said.
In Kentucky, Campbell, Franklin, Jefferson and Scott counties are included on the list, but Louisville is the only city included. In Indiana, Monroe County, which is less than two hours from Louisville, is the only sanctuary jurisdiction listed for that state.
The list follows an April 28 executive order signed by Trump requiring Homeland Security to publish a list of states and local jurisdictions they believe to be obstructing federal immigration laws.
It also follows several Louisville and Jefferson County area law enforcement agencies entering agreements with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, most recently Heritage Creek Police Department.
Mayor Craig Greenberg and officials at Louisville Metro Police have not yet responded to requests for comment.
