A Lufthansa aircraft en route from New York to Frankfurt was forced to turn back due to an engine failure over the Atlantic, the German carrier said on Wednesday.
“A significant increase in fuel consumption was recorded on one engine during the climb,” Lufthansa told dpa upon request about the incident on May 13, adding the engine failed during the subsequent cruise flight.
The cockpit crew then issued an emergency request to air traffic control and the aircraft returned to John F Kennedy airport in New York, where it landed and taxied to its position on its own, according to the airline.
The engine has since been examined, with a defective control unit identified as the source of the fault and replaced.
“The aircraft has been back in service for several days,” Lufthansa said.
