Hitting the highway in metro Detroit? It might be best to leave a few minutes early and check MDOT and your favorite map app to plan for construction and the backups that can stem from it.
Diane Cross, spokeswoman for the Michigan Department of Transportation, or MDOT, projects are long-term plans and depend on funding.
Construction barrels and signage are up and ready to direct vehicles on where to go on the service drive of eastbound I-696 on Friday, Feb. 28, 2025.
“What drivers may call construction can be long-term projects, or maintenance work for safety, or permit work, which is an outside agency using our roads,” Cross said.
Though construction happens year-round, most of it happens April through November, Cross said. This summer, metro Detroit will see three major highway projects, along with several small, shorter ones.
I-75 in northern Oakland County
As a part of a $160-million project to resurface and repair Interstate 75 from M-15 to the Oakland/Genesee county line, a number of northbound and southbound I-75 exit and entrance ramps, including East Holly Road, Grange Hall Road, and northbound and southbound US-24, will be closed until late fall.
The project is expected to support 1,936 jobs, according to an MDOT news release.
M-14/I-96 in Livonia/ Plymouth
The northbound I-275 ramp to eastbound I-96 is expected to be closed until late June as a part of MDOT’s $140-million project to rebuild M-14/I-96 in the city of Livonia and Plymouth Township, Wayne County.
The full project, which is expected to support 1,336 jobs, has multiple phases and isn’t expected to be completed this construction season.
Maps and details about the project can be found at www.M14Reconstruction.org.
Eastbound I-696
The eastbound I-696 $260-million project is already underway and expected to last until 2027. The highway is closed from M-10 to I-75.
