Earlier this week, Benny Blanco opened up about his desire to have children during an interview with InStyle.

“I love kids; I love being an uncle. I want to be a dad, though, God willing. I’m just dreaming and praying every day,” said Benny, who is engaged to Selena Gomez.

This isn’t the first time Benny has talked about wanting kids. Last May, the record producer told Howard Stern that his “next goal” in life was to become a father, noting: “It’s always a topic of conversation to me every day. I have a ton of God kids; I’ve got a ton of nephews. I love being around kids.”

Meanwhile, Selena has talked openly about wanting kids, too. Just a few months ago, she revealed during a joint appearance with Benny on Jay Shetty’s podcast, “I don’t know what will happen, obviously, but I love children…They’re just so sweet. So absolutely, when that day comes, I’m so excited for it.” Not long after, she told Benny during a chat with Vevo, “When we have kids, I’m gonna be the best storytime teller.”

A few months prior, Selena revealed for the first time that she is unable to carry children. “I haven’t ever said this…But I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” she said. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

“I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me,” she continued before later adding: “I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”

With this in mind, several internet users were shocked this week to see Benny being criticized for his latest comments about wanting kids with Selena. “saying this while knowing she can’t have kids is wild,” read one viral response. “Saying this when you know your fiance can’t get pregnant is EVIL,” someone else wrote, while another tweet read, “Kind of a weird thing to say after she’s come out about her struggles.”

However, Benny was hastily defended by numerous fans who pointed out that there are, of course, multiple ways to have children — and that wanting kids doesn’t necessarily mean wanting pregnancy. As mentioned, Selena herself has talked publicly about being open to routes like surrogacy or adoption; she also once revealed that before she was dating Benny, she’d planned on adopting a child alone at age 35.

“there are SO many ways to have kids,” one person tweeted in response to backlash over Benny’s comments. “i didn’t know that being pregnant is the only way to be a parent,” said another.

“There’s other ways to become a parent,” one user echoed, while another said, “She can have children through a surrogate y’all are so uninformed.”
