The Ford Mustang GTD has been caught testing ahead of another Nürburgring lap record attempt.
In an official release issued in May 2024, Ford highlighted the race-focused nature of the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD. Its carbon fiber body, active aerodynamics, and rear transaxle have made the GTD a beast on the track. However, it’s the semi-active suspension that Ford really wanted to express.
“We’ve never done a suspension like this on Mustang,” said Greg Goodall, Mustang GTD Chief Program Engineer. “To meet the aggressive lap time targets we set, we looked to motorsports for that inspiration to do something really advanced. This cutting-edge suspension and advanced dampers are key to turning a Mustang into a Mustang GTD.”
On August 7, 2024, the Mustang GTD became the fastest American production car with a Nürburgring lap time of 6:57.68 minutes. The video of the lap showcased incredible handling, as well as an orchestra of powerful engine noises, demonstrating just how capable American muscle can be on an international track.
Mustang GTD Heading Back to Nürburgring
After breaking the American record, the Mustang GTD wants more. However, it’s unclear exactly what Ford is hoping to accomplish next. While the American record is already theirs, it’s a long shot for the Mustang GTD to beat the lap times of the general lap record: Mercedes-AMG One’s 6 minutes and 29 seconds. It’s not likely that the Mustang GTD could finish the lap almost half a minute faster.
The Mustang GTD isn’t even in the top 10, according to Fastest Laps:
-
Mercedes-AMG One – 6:29.09
-
Porsche 911 GT2 RS – 6:38.84
-
AMG GT Black Series – 6:43.62
-
Porsche 911 GT3 RS – 6:44.85
-
Lamborghini Aventador SVJ – 6:44.97
-
Porsche 911 GT3 RS – 6:49.66
-
Porsche 911 GT3 – 6:50.70
While the Ford Mustang GTD may not have the fastest rap record (yet), it’s still a highly impressive beast. The supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine delivers 815 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, enabling it to reach a top speed of 202 miles per hour. Additionally, it features a race-focused design that makes it more aggressive than any other muscle car on the market.
Even if it doesn’t surpass some of the other vehicles’ records, fans are excited to see the new numbers on the track after a bit of practice, upgrading, and improved conditions. Either way, it’s quite entertaining to watch the Ford Mustang GTD attempt it.
