President Donald Trump has endorsed U.S. Rep. Zach Nunn in the 2026 race for Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District.
Nunn is the Republican incumbent in a race drawing national attention from Democrats, who’ve placed the district on their list of targeted seats as they seek to retake the U.S. House majority in 2026.
The president wrote in a May 8 post on Truth Social that Nunn is a “fantastic Representative for the Great People of Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District!”
“A Brave Combat Veteran, Zach is fighting hard to Grow our Economy, Cut Taxes, Support our Farmers, Secure the Border, Strengthen our Military, Deliver Quality Care to our Veterans, Promote PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH, and Defend our always under siege Second Amendment. Zach Nunn has my Complete and Total Endorsement — HE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN!” Trump wrote in the post.
Trump endorsed Nunn during his first run for Congress in 2022. He didn’t directly endorse Nunn in 2024, but Trump and the Republican National Committee backed him with get-out-the-vote and fundraising efforts.
While Nunn hasn’t formally launched a reelection campaign, he recently took his name out of the running for the wide-open Iowa governor’s race after Gov. Kim Reynolds announced in April that she’s not seeking reelection.
Nunn said his work is not done in Congress.
“We also have a mission,” he said. “I am combat focused and trained. And now we are in Washington. I’ve got a job to do. I’m going to deliver on three of Trump’s (priorities).”
The endorsement comes as two Democratic challengers, Iowa House Minority Leader Jennifer Konfrst and state Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott, recently entered the race seeking Nunn’s seat in 2026.
The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the seat as one that “leans Republican” and Sabato’s Crystal Ball calls it a “toss-up.”
Nunn responded to Trump’s endorsement, saying he’s honored to serve the 3rd District.
“I’m so honored to announce that I’ve been endorsed by President Donald J. Trump,” Nunn said in a May 8 video post on X, formerly Twitter. “Together, we’re rolling up our sleeves and fighting for Iowa families and Americans across this country. Together, we’re leading on border security, energy independence and cutting taxes for working-class families like yours. I’m honored to be serving you, and even prouder to be fighting for this great state.”
